Patent

Generally, a patent is the granting of a property right by the government (or sovereign authority) to an inventor.  The grant provides the inventor exclusive rights to the patented process, design, or invention for a designated period - usually 20 years, subject patent term extensions or other grants - in exchange for a disclosure of the invention. They are a form of intangible asset.
